“Honey,” the newlywed husband said. His wife sat in a chair engaged in a book. “Honey,” he repeated. When she didn’t answer, he busied himself elsewhere.
This seemed to happen daily. The husband grew concerned and scheduled exams for both of them with an audiologist. After the tests, the husband was shocked to learn that his wife’s hearing was better than his. “What gives?” the husband asked the doctor. “She doesn’t respond when I’m talking?”
The doctor thought for a moment and said, “Her hearing is perfect, but highly selective.”
“Therefore this is what the Lord God Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘Listen! I am going to bring on Judah and on everyone living in Jerusalem every disaster I pronounced against them. I spoke to them, but they did not listen; I called to them, but they did not answer’” (Jeremiah 35:17).
When God speaks, He anticipates a response. He has spoken through His Word, and He expects His children to pay attention and act accordingly.
Challenge for Today: Read Scripture with a proper sense of awe, realizing it is God’s Word to you and others.
